Independent & Affiliate SupportedIssue No. 03 — Autumn
About

A quieter way to shop.

The Conscience is an independent UK guide to brands that take the long view — on materials, on labour, on the planet. No sponsored placements. No paid rankings. Just considered recommendations.

We started The Conscience because most "ethical shopping" guides felt like advertising in a different font. Lists were paid for, certifications were waved around without context, and the brands doing the slowest, hardest, quietest work rarely made it to the top.

Our directory only features brands that meet at least one of four independent UK or international standards — B Corp, Soil Association, Fairtrade, or FSC — and that we've read enough about to vouch for. Where a brand has been certified, we say so. Where it hasn't but is doing meaningful work, we explain why we included it anyway.

How we choose what to feature

Every product in the directory is reviewed by a person before it goes live. We check the brand's parent company, supply chain disclosures, certifications, returns and repair policies, and (where possible) the materials at the SKU level. Anything that fails review is rejected, regardless of commission.

How we make money

We earn affiliate commission when a reader buys through some of our outbound links. That commission never influences which brands are featured, the order they appear in, or what we say about them. Read the full affiliate disclosure.
